The Ecogenomics Consortium started in January 2004 as 'Innovative Cluster' program of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative. This Public-Private research collaboration received 6-year public (co)funding and early in 2010, almost all projects have ended. Although the formal finalization of the program takes place at the end of 2010, the lifespan of the newly obtained knowledge on molecular techniques for soil- and environmental research is expected to last much longer, fueling future scientific and probably even public debates for the coming decades. Furthermore, at the end of 2010 new plans and programs are being designed and starting up to extent the ecogenomics impact even further. As the EU report 'Soil biodiversity: functions, threats and tools for policy makers' of February 2010 clearly illustrates, interest in the diverse life present in soils is increasing. New (basic and applied) knowledge is of crucial importance to ensure and maintain a high biodiversity in soils, and to cope with today's (climate change, pollution) and possible future challenges (antibiotic resistance, urbanisation, ...). While the story of the Ecogenomics Consortium ends here, the story of ecogenomics continues... Roy Kloet |
